How to Bid – Irish Whiskey Merchant

How to Bid

If you have never bought whisky online or with the help of a whisky auctioneer before, please, do not worry. The Irish Whiskey Merchant is here to help. We can be reached at info@irishwhiskeymerchant.com to answer any questions you may have. Alternatively, have a look at our FAQs page.

Step 1:
Website Registration

In order to bid on an item, you must first register with Irish Whiskey Merchant and create an account with us. In doing so you agree to our Terms & Conditions. Registration is a one-time process and once completed it will enable members to both buy and sell whisky. Once you have created your account, the first time you try to bid on an item you will be re-directed to pay a £5 joining fee. This is a one-off charge of £5 (Exc. VAT), which is non-refundable. This process is used to authenticate and verify real and serious users and helps mitigate against illegitimate bidding.

Step 3:
Placing Your Bid

To bid on a lot, you should first click on that prospective lot, which will take you to the unique lot page. Simply type your maximum bid in the bid amount box and confirm. Irish Whiskey Merchant will automatically increase the bid level of the Lot incrementally (based on the table below) until it reaches your maximum bid. We will alert you by e-mail if you have been out-bid. Irish Whiskey Merchant uses ‘anti-sniping’ software. This is in the interest of fairness and it means that if a bid is placed on a lot in the last 15 minutes of a closing auction, that specific bottle type will be extended by a further 15 minutes. This process will continue until no more bids are placed within fifteen minutes.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: 10% buyers commission plus VAT applies to the hammer price.

Step 4:
Payment

If you have successfully bid on an item – congratulations! We will alert you by e-mail and request that you follow a link to our secure payment page, in order to complete the purchase of the item and let us know your delivery requirements. Buyer’s commission of 10% is added to the Hammer Price of all Lots.

We accept payment via Bank Transfer/BACS, and all major credit / debit cards. Please note that we do not accept American Express (Amex).

For customers outside the UK/EU, a payment surcharge of 3.5% will apply to payments made by credit card.

If you are situated within the UK, 20% Value Added Tax (VAT) will be added to all fees, including commission charges and delivery.

Step 5:
Shipping

Once payment has been received, Irish Whiskey Merchant aims to deliver your whisky to your chosen location as soon as possible. We are able to deliver whiskies internationally. Please ensure you check our Shipping Page before bidding to ensure that we can deliver to your location. Delivery charges are also detailed on the Shipping Page.

The Irish Whiskey Merchant team takes every effort to package and dispatch orders carefully and securely. The courier companies do not take on any liability for items lost or broken in transit and it is recommended that you add your own insurance if eligible. Damage to an item in transit will not be compensated, therefore, there is no protection against seal failures or cosmetic impairment.
